The idea of “respect” in politics seemed so zeitgeisty back in 05 but today it’s almost a dirty word. Its loss of currency can be seen in the demise of the Respect Taskforce, once flagship of the third Blair victory as well as in the haemorrhaging of George Galloway’s vanity project Respect party into two floundering factions

I have a post
here over at Progress on the Spice Girls and politics including a link to their notorious Spectatpr interview from exactly 11 years ago (makes me feel old) when they came out for Major. They are also listed here in the Observer's
list of right-wingers in rock but according to Wiki Geri switched to Labour for the 2001 election for a PPB that I have no recollection of having seen. Anyone know which way they swing now that (a la Led Zep) they are doing a comeback and have been endorsed by Ed Balls? Noel Gallager predictably denounced Blair
not long after all the iconic photos.
Blair for his part worried that Oasis would trash Downing Street so only extended the invite to one band-member. Is Geri still "one of us" though?

It seems to be 70s a go-go at the moment with reverberations of that decade all over the place. But despite its recent denigration perhaps there is something to be said for the decade that taste forgot?

Gary Titley leader of Labour's MEPs is not standing for re-election according to the
Manchester Evening News. Titley tells the MEN it’s all down to the colossal waste of having a rotating parliament that flips between Strasbourg and Brussels.
Having worked in Strasbourg for an MEP and been a postgrad at the
University there I have fond memories of the place but recognise the arguments for streamlining. However wit the building of a new purpose-bulit chamber to cope with enlargement, there must be no chance of a relocation from Strasbourg in a hurry. The issue has long been debated and was used by Mitterand as a bargaining chip when the Maastrict treaty needed signing.

Got myself down to a new bit of the redrawn Dagenham seat on Saturday for some leafleting and got a decent interview out of Jon Cruddas. He confirmed that he had been offered a ministerial post in the reshuffle but didn't want to be contained. Cruddas is genial, chummy on the doorstep and thoughtful. The following was conducted whilst he was driving from Elm Park to central London, having his lunch (pie and chips) and talking into my tape recorder all simultaneously - talk about multi-tasking!

The newest member of the Commons Virendra Sharma, elected at July's by-election in Ealing Southall, addressed my branch Labour Party last week. Seeing as many Labour Home readers helped get him elected I thought I'd pass on what he said.

For a programme that's only been going for 4 weeks
Question Time Extra has already managed to draw in some of the blogosphere's big names for its continuation of the real Question Time debate on News 24 after the main event.
Iain Dale, our own dear
Alex Hilton and yesterday little ol' me have been on now. As a show constructed around viewer's responses though, the real stars are the audience. Yet Radio 4 presenter Eddy Mair argues that there is too much interactivity on the beeb.
"What makes listeners or viewers or, heaven forbid bloggers think they have the faintest idea about broadcasting?" he demands.

looks like MPs will have to decamp somewhere else while the work is done which has got some bloggers going.
